Psychotherapy at Neuma

Thoughtful therapy for healing, understanding, and growth.

People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons.

Sometimes something clearly isn't working. Anxiety has become overwhelming. Depression has made life smaller. OCD has taken over too much mental space. A painful experience continues to affect the present. A relationship is struggling. A teenager is having a difficult time and their parents aren't sure how to help.

Other times, the problem is harder to name.

You may be functioning reasonably well while recognizing patterns you don't understand or can't seem to change. You may be entering a new stage of life and discovering that old ways of understanding yourself no longer fit. You may want healthier relationships, greater self-understanding, or a stronger sense of who you are and how you want to live.

All of these can be good reasons for therapy.

More than symptom management

We believe good psychotherapy should help alleviate suffering. When anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, relationship distress, or other difficulties are interfering with life, feeling better matters.

But we don't believe psychological health ends there.

Therapy can also help us become more aware of the patterns shaping our lives, understand where those patterns came from, develop greater freedom in how we respond, and build lives and relationships that reflect what actually matters to us.

Sometimes that means learning concrete skills or developing new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions. Sometimes it means slowing down enough to notice something we have spent years avoiding. Sometimes it means understanding how our histories continue to influence our present relationships. And sometimes it means having a place where difficult questions can be explored without needing immediate answers.

The work looks different for different people because people are different.

Who are you looking for help for?

Zach and Alicia share a relational, depth-oriented approach to psychotherapy, but they work with different populations and bring different areas of training and expertise.

Finding the right therapist matters. These pathways can help you determine where to begin.

Therapy for Teens & Adolescents

Adolescence brings enormous change: greater independence, increasingly complex relationships, questions of identity and belonging, academic and social pressures, changing family relationships, and the beginnings of decisions about what adulthood might look like.

Zach works extensively with adolescents experiencing anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, depression, identity concerns, relationship difficulties, family conflict, performance pressure, and other challenges that can emerge during these years.

His work also recognizes something important: adolescence isn't simply a collection of problems to solve. It is a formative period in which young people are developing a sense of who they are, what they value, and how they want to relate to the world around them.

Therapy for College Students & Young Adults

The years surrounding college and early adulthood can be exciting, disorienting, lonely, demanding, and transformative—sometimes all at once.

Questions about identity, relationships, independence, career, family, sexuality, spirituality, purpose, achievement, and belonging often become especially important during this period. Anxiety, OCD, depression, perfectionism, ADHD, relationship difficulties, and uncertainty about the future can complicate an already significant developmental transition.

Zach specializes in working with college students and emerging adults as they navigate both the difficulties and possibilities of becoming more fully themselves.

Therapy for Adults

Adulthood doesn't mean we stop changing or stop feeling challenged.

Adults seek therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, perfectionism, difficult relationships, grief, major transitions, longstanding patterns, or simply the growing realization that some part of life isn't working as well as they would like.

Both Zach and Alicia work with adults, with different areas of emphasis and expertise. Learning a little about each of them can help you determine whose approach and experience may best fit what brings you to therapy.

Couples & Relationship Therapy

Relationships have a remarkable ability to bring both our greatest sources of connection and some of our deepest vulnerabilities to the surface.

Alicia works with couples experiencing conflict, disconnection, communication difficulties, codependency, recurring relational patterns, and other challenges to intimacy and connection. Her work is grounded in an understanding that relationship difficulties rarely belong entirely to one person; they emerge within patterns that couples can learn to recognize and change together.

Family Therapy

Families are systems. What affects one person inevitably affects the people around them, and difficulties that appear to belong to one family member often make more sense when understood within the relationships surrounding them.

Alicia works with families to understand recurring patterns, improve communication, strengthen relationships, establish healthier boundaries, and develop new ways of responding to one another.

EXPLORE FAMILY THERAPY

Areas of Focus

Across our different practices, our work commonly includes:

Anxiety
When worry, fear, avoidance, or an overactive sense of responsibility begins to narrow life.

OCD & Perfectionism
Including intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, scrupulosity, relationship OCD, excessive certainty-seeking, and the pressure to get things exactly right.

Trauma & EMDR
Helping people process experiences that continue to shape how they understand themselves, other people, and the world.

Depression
Exploring both the immediate experience of depression and the circumstances, relationships, losses, patterns, and meanings surrounding it.

Identity & Life Transitions
Times when old ways of understanding ourselves no longer fit and something new is beginning to emerge.

Relationships & Family Patterns
Understanding how we connect, protect ourselves, communicate, set boundaries, experience conflict, and repeat patterns we may not consciously choose.

Creativity & Performance
The particular psychological experiences of artists, musicians, performers, writers, and other creative people, including performance anxiety, perfectionism, vulnerability, identity, and the relationship between creativity and self-worth.

Our approach to therapy

We don't believe there is one therapeutic technique that fits every person or every problem.

Our work is integrative and draws from several evidence-based and depth-oriented approaches depending on the needs of the person in front of us. These may include psychodynamic therapy, Internal Family Systems and parts-oriented work, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD, EMDR, family-systems approaches, and other relational and experiential forms of psychotherapy.

But techniques are only part of good therapy.

We believe meaningful change also depends on the quality of the therapeutic relationship: having a place where you can be honest, curious, uncertain, frustrated, hopeful, contradictory, or unfinished without needing to perform wellness for the person sitting across from you.

Therapy should be a place where there is room for the whole person.
