The Teenage Brain: Why Your Teen Isn’t Just Being Difficult
by Zach Meyer, MA, LPC, LMHC
If you're the parent of a teenager, you've probably asked yourself: Why are they like this?! It’s not just hormones. Science shows that the adolescent brain is still under construction—especially in areas tied to decision-making, emotional regulation, and impulse control.
According to research highlighted by Harvard Health, adolescence is a time of rapid and uneven brain development, especially in the frontal lobes — the part of the brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation. While teens may look physically mature, their brains are still under construction well into their 20s.
This mismatch often explains why teenagers can be emotionally reactive, struggle with planning, and seem to take unnecessary risks. It’s not defiance — it’s development.
As a therapist who specializes in psychotherapy for teens and adolescents, I work with both young people and their families to better understand and navigate this critical stage. Therapy for teens can help strengthen self-awareness, improve emotional regulation, and support healthier decision-making — all while respecting their growing independence.
At NEUMA Psychological Services, we create a safe, supportive space for teens to explore the challenges of adolescence — from anxiety and depression to identity development and academic stress.
